Subs not used: Chris Thompson, Adam Wade. Cammell Laird: Not available Warrington Town got their season back on track with a thoroughly deserved 2-1 win against Birkenhead outfit Cammell Lairds at Cantilever Park, with re-juvenated striker Anthony Hickey bagging a goal in each half after falling behind early on. Manager Joey Dunn sprang a surprise in the starting line up, leaving out joint top scorer Chris Thompson, and introducing midfielder Michael Brown into midfield and pushing Hickey up front. It was Hickey who caused the visiting defence problems from the start with his direct running, with Brown seeing his early shot deflected behind by the Lairds defence. The visitors gradually got themselves into the game, with striker Aaron Bowen heading over from close range, before the same player put the visitors ahead in the 18th minute, picking up a loose ball in the penalty area and firing home from an acute angle. Seven minutes later, the visitors went close to extending their lead, midfielder Adam Wilson seeing his long range effort well saved by David Stevenson in the Town goal. Town got back into the game, with youngster Sam Finley pushing Town forward from midfield and Hickey looking dangerous up front. Indeed, it was the latter, who equalised for Town, latching onto Adam Carden's square pass to finish beyond Laird's former Tranmere Rovers keeper Phil Palethorpe. With Town level, they soon went in search of the lead, with Brown heading over soon after. Seven minutes before half time, Town should have got further ahead, Palethorpe reacting well to deny Hickey from close range, before saving the same players follow up. Town had two more good chances shortly before half time, Brown shooting over when under pressure before Gahgan miskicked Brown' low cross when well placed. Right on the stroke of half time, Town struck both posts within 30 seconds. Finley seeing his drive rebound off the post, before Adam Carden saw his follow up strike the other upright. The home side started the second half in control once again, with defender River Humphreys heading narrowly wide, before Town took the lead after Carden was felled in the penalty area, Hickey slotting home, depite the best efforts of Palethorpe, who got his fingers to the ball. Less than a minute later, Town were indebted to Stevenson for keeping the score level, Stevenson producing a fine save to deny Bowen when the latter was through on goal. With just over 21 minutes to go, Town almost went further ahead, recent signing Matt Doughty forcing Palethorpe to save his fine curling free kick at his near post. With Warrington in complete control, Hickey went looking for his hat trick, shooting narrowly wide. Gahgan almost put Town further ahead soon after, seeing his shot from close range go over the bar, under pressure from the defender. Town' last chance fell to subtitute Liam Shipton, but he placed his long range drive narrowly wide of Palethorpe's upright. The last minutes of the game saw the visitors push for an equalising goal, firstly, former Town midfielder Connor Millington drove wide, before the same player saw his shot saved, only to see the rebound, unbelievably missed by on rushing striker Marc Stevens. | ||||||
