The victory moved the Wire to seventh in the league table with home games against lowly Rossendale on Tuesday evening, kick off 7.45pm and Ossett Albion on Saturday, kick off 3pm. While Warrington rode their luck in the opening 20 minutes, with two fine saves from keeper Richie Mottram keeping them in the game, they also saw two goals ruled out for allaged infringements, included a lob from Salmon which looked a perfectly good effort. With the game goaless at the break it was Town who eventually broke the deadlock as Salmon used his power and pace to cut inside and fire home on 61 minutes. But Town’s lead was short lived as the home side equalised within four minutes with a long range effort sneaking under Mottram’s outstretched hand. With time ticking away Town got a free kick on the edge of the box and top scorer Chris Gaghan fired into the top of the net for his 22nd goal of the season on 85 minutes. Town held out for three much needed points which keeps them in the play off hunt and maximum points in their next two home games will have them within touching distance. The victory avenged a 4-1 thumping at Cantilever Park in the league and a 3-2 win in the President’s Cup. After the game a delighted manager Joey Dunn praised his team for their determination. “We were under the cosh for the opening 20 minutes but we dug in and battled hard and got our just rewards in the end.” He was pleased with Salmon’s goal scoring debut. “You could feel the whole team lift when he scored. “He has brought a new dimension to our forward line and is a quality signing for the club.” The Warrington players were cheered off to a standing ovation from the travelling barmy army. | ||||||
