Town started brightly against their high flying opponents, creating two very good early chances, the first falling to striker Stuart Wallstead, who saw his fierce drive well saved by former Town keeper Ryan McMahon and a minute later, midfielder Dave Tickle rounded McMahon, only to be forced wide and see his cross scrambled away by the home side. The home side started to dominate the game and create problems for Town, with striker Mark Houghton blasting over the bar. The same player soon forced a fine save from Ritchie Mottram and then strike partner George Donnelly did the same. Two minutes into injury time, Skelmersdale went ahead, when central defender Michael White was allowed a free header from a corner and clinically beat Mottram. The second half started in the same manner, with Skelmersdale on top, once again forcing Mottram into making another save and defender Shaun Foster headed over the bar. Town’s best chance of the half fell to substitute Carl Rendell who saw his angled drive go narrowly past the far post. Soon after Mottram was back in action to deny midfielder Sean McConville with a save at the near post. Even the late introduction of substitute Billy Webb had no impact on the game, and Town slid meekly out of the last cup that they could win. | ||||||
