Curzon Ashton: Not available A last gasp penalty deep in injury time denied Warrington Town all three points as they drew 2-2 against promotion chasing Cuzon Ashton at Cantilever Park. Town stunned the FA Cup giant killers in an action packed game racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from strikers Jimmy McCarthy on 23 minutes and Thomas Lamb on the half hour. A couple of excellent saves by Town keeper Ritchie Mottram ensured Warrington kept a clean sheet up to the break. Early in the second half McCarthy had a great chance to make it 3-0 when he was put through one on one with the keeper but wasted a gilt edged opportunity by blasting the ball into the keeper’s body. The visitors who are one of the hot favourites to make the play-offs despite a surprise 3-1 home defeat to Town earlier in the season, started to dominate the game and despite some more heroics from Mottram it was no surprise when striker Michael Norton fired home on 65 minutes. A Warrington team missing five regulars through injury and no recognised centre half on the pitch, managed to hold out until deep in injury time when make-shift right back Phil Hadland gave away a penalty with a clumsy challenge. Norton made no mistake burying the ball into the back of the net giving the visitors a valuable point in their quest for promotion. Meanwhile Warrington were left to reflect on McCarthy’s missed chance which could have sealed all three points. | ||||||
