WARRINGTON Town travelled to Harrogate for their final game of the season and finished on a high with a 2-3 victory.
Live wire striker Jimmy McCarthy was first to go close, forcing home keeper Liam Sutcliffe into a good save. Town had the ball in the net in the 12th minute through top scorer Chris Gahgan, but saw the goal ruled out for offside. McCarthy’s strike partner Rob Dutton was next to go close, but was again denied by Sutcliffe.
Town took a deserved lead in the 25th minute, when midfielder Mike Grogan capitalised on a mistake to slot home under Sutcliffe. Railway should have equalised two minutes later, when striker Nathan James saw an easy chance go wide of the upright. Town continued to have the best of the game, and it was no surprise when they went further ahead, when Phil Hadland scored with a bullet effort from 25 yards after a free kick had not been properly cleared by the Railway defence.
The second started more evenly, with the home side being more in the game but Town were still arguably on top. Harrogate could have got back into the game just after the hour, but substitute David Henry scooped the ball over the bar. With just over 20 minutes to go, Railway pulled a goal back, when tall midfielder Steve Smith flicked a header beyond Mottram. Harrogate were now arguably on top and equalised six minutes later, when Henry turned and shot home in front of Mottram.
With a quarter of an hour to go, the game could have gone either way, and it was Warrington’s Maltese Under 21’s international Richard Chetcuti who won the game for Town, latching onto a pass by defender Mike Stewart, before rounding Sutcliffe to slot home into the unguarded net.
