The Yellows rounded off their 2016-17 season with a 1-1 draw against Matlock Town. Michael Bakare’s first half goal had given them the advantage in Derbyshire, but the game turned on a controversial red card handed to Mitch Duggan in first half stoppage time. The numerical disadvantage ultimately worked against Paul Carden’s men, with Adam Yates’ equaliser earning the hosts a draw and ensuring they remained above Warrington in the table. Having only come up as champions last season, the Yellows still had a chance of the play-offs until the last couple of weeks, and were only mathematically ruled out of the running on Monday.
