Match Details: Saturday 20th March 1993 Northern Premier League Division 1
Attendance: 174 Warrington Town: Kenny Saunders, Joey Dunn, Mike Tandy Harrogate Town: Not available The day of the Warrington bombing. "The players of Warrington Town and Harrogate Town, due to play each other less than two hours after the terrorist bomb blasted Warrington's town centre with such catastrophic consequences, refused to let the inhumanity of the action disrupt people's normal lives. League Secretary, Duncan Bayley, had immediately given permission for the game to be postponed if deemed necessary by club officials and, with nearby Loushers Lane virtually at a stand still due to the volume of diverted traffic making it extremely difficult to reach the ground, a great deal of thought was given to calling the match off. Fortunately, Harrogate Town were in good time and able to reach Cantilever Park but several Warrington players were not so lucky and had to walk over three miles. Manager Derek Brownbill and Secretary Graham Ost took a 10 mile detour to get to the ground but Warrington based player, Neil Williams, didn't make it until after the team sheet had been handed in. The game eventually got underway with a vastly reduced attendance, although it was boosted during the course of the afternoon by latecomers. The community is still deeply shocked by the events and a minte's silence will be held at Monday's game against Gretna in respect of those killed and injured." | ||||||
